stories

Stories is a new section just added to the Tight ‘n Bright website. While there is no doubt that cancer has touched many lives there are definitely some solemn stories out there as well as numerous victories to be celebrated. Tight ‘n Bright is really about the celebration of life with a fundraising effort as a byproduct.

Stories has been created to allow you to share how cancer has affected your life in a positive, emotional or some other way. So take a few minutes and pull up your keyboard to start typing. It’s simple to do just post a comment to this post and away you go.

I heard about this event on Energy 101.5 and I am going to be there! I have been thinking about doing something similar myself — hosting a big party to celebrate life and having the proceeds go towards a cancer support group. I was so excited to hear that someone is already doing it!

In 2007, at 31 years of age, I was diagnosed with small cell cancer of the parotid (salivary) gland. I have always been and continue to be active. I have good eating habits and maintain a healthy weight. I have never smoked. Sometimes nasty shit just happens and no one can offer any explanation. I had surgery to remove the tumor followed by simultaneous radiation and chemotherapy. About one year after my surgery, I was back at work full-time and I am feeling well. They tell me to consider myself cured, but that is harder to really believe than you might imagine.

I want to celebrate life! I am a survivor! Thanks for giving me this opportunity to celebrate with other supporters and survivors. See you on March 21!

I have been working in Event Fundraising for cancer for a few years, and the reason why I work in this type of work is because I like dealing with people and working for such a great cause. It creates new challenges every day that I come to work. It is amazing to see so many people wanting to give back to the fight against cancer because everyone knows someone that has cancer or that has lost their battle with it.

The facts are real. 2 in 5 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime but we can help that by fundraising in our communities, letting people know we are here to help them along their journey and to let the general public know that 30-35% of all cancer can be prevented by eating well, being active and maintaining a healthy body weight. I have seen some great events take place over the last few years in northern Alberta and most recently with my work in Calgary. Everyone who starts an event has a story as to why they are doing it, and over the course of the event we get to know these people. They come to us with their ideas, we meet and help them plan their event and work with them over time to make the event a great success. This type of job is very rewarding to me. I have always been the type of person to be involved with my community. This job allows me to do that every day knowing that I help those who have just walked the cancer journey, family and friends who want to help someone that is going through the journey right now, people who want to honour somebody, or just regular people who want to help out with this cause. At the Alberta Cancer Foundation we have a vision that we are all working towards, and that’s a world without cancer. Our goal by 2025 is to reduce the incidence of new cancers by 35 per cent, reduce deaths due to cancer by 50 per cent, and eliminate suffering in every way possible for those Albertans living with cancer.
