Twenty-five years ago I was 6 years old. I had a younger brother Robert who was two and a half…and that was as old as he would ever get. I remember that cold winter day on February 14, 1985 (yes Valentine’s Day) when I was taken home from elementary school like it was yesterday. Walking home with my grandparents who were in from out of town visiting. As I came around the corner I could see my house and the cars that lined the road way. I knew something was drastically wrong. I ran like I’ve never run before and flew through the door of my parents house. It was then I realized just what had happened. Robert had been sick almost since he was born and spent a lot of time at the hospital. I even spent a lot of time at the hospital but nothing like my parents did. Luckily we had good close family friends I could stay with. At first it was fun going to sleepovers. After weeks of sleepovers though, they became less and less fun.

Since losing Robert to Medulloblastoma, I’ve lost two grandparents, a great uncle, two great aunts and several family friends. I have friends who have battled and survived. Even friends who have beaten it multiple-times and still lost the battle one final time. There’s no doubt in my mind how much of an impact cancer has had on my life…and I’ve been fortunate enough to never have had it.

Honestly, I remember the good times and great impact these people have had on my life. It’s because of these people and even those whom I’ve never met, nor may have the opportunity to meet, that Tight ‘n Bright is around. It’s a reason to party. A reason to raise funds and awareness. Most importantly though, it is a reason to celebrate life! I life we are each fortunate to currently have and the lives of those who we’ve lost. As with our first Tight ‘n Bright party in 2009, our goal for this annual event is to raise funds in excess of $20,000 to go directly to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary. We, myself and the team involved, would like you to join us for a fun filled, theme evening on Saturday, March 20, 2010 for the Second Annual Tight ‘n Bright – it’s where a party can help find a cure.

Organizers

The key group of organizers have lost immediate family members, friends and even had scares of their own. The core group consists of three individuals.

Marshall Stevenson, Monica Subrt and Andrew Stevenson. Each has their own story and reason why they are involved in Tight ‘n Bright 2010.

I have been working in Event Fundraising for cancer for a few years, and the reason why I work in this type of work is because I like dealing with people and working for such a great cause. It creates new challenges every day that I come to work. It is amazing to see so many people wanting to give back to the fight against cancer because everyone knows someone that has cancer or that has lost their battle with it.

The facts are real. 2 in 5 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime but we can help that by fundraising in our communities, letting people know we are here to help them along their journey and to let the general public know that 30-35% of all cancer can be prevented by eating well, being active and maintaining a healthy body weight. I have seen some great events take place over the last few years in northern Alberta and most recently with my work in Calgary. Everyone who starts an event has a story as to why they are doing it, and over the course of the event we get to know these people. They come to us with their ideas, we meet and help them plan their event and work with them over time to make the event a great success. This type of job is very rewarding to me. I have always been the type of person to be involved with my community. This job allows me to do that every day knowing that I help those who have just walked the cancer journey, family and friends who want to help someone that is going through the journey right now, people who want to honour somebody, or just regular people who want to help out with this cause. At the Alberta Cancer Foundation we have a vision that we are all working towards, and that’s a world without cancer. Our goal by 2025 is to reduce the incidence of new cancers by 35 per cent, reduce deaths due to cancer by 50 per cent, and eliminate suffering in every way possible for those Albertans living with cancer.

Last night was truly an eye-opening experience. I had the chance to chat with a large number of survivors and also meet a lot of people. I want to thank each and every single one of you that donated in some way shape or form. Without our sponsors – Energy 101.5, The Whiskey, NewAd Media, Avenue Magazine, Process Color, WestJet Vacations, Slip-offs Custom Shoes, Rewind Consignment, Brazilian Shoebox, Chinook Centre, Extreme Pita and Survivor Bootcamp – none of the evening would have been possible.

I’d like to also thank you, specifically you, for following the website and blog updates. For showing up at the event. For thinking about the event that you weren’t able to attend. For just being you. Thank you for your contribution.

Of course there were many people at the event that were instrumental in helping sell raffle tickets like Monica & Afra and Dean & Jason to name just a few. And then our photographers as well. Alan Chong Photography and Toby Solak of S2 Photo took a number of great shots that many people took away with them. Thanks to both of you for working through the evening with me and upselling donations. And speaking of photos, I’ll be posting some online so that you can have a look to see what you missed out on…don’t worry though, we’re already thinking about doing it again next year.

Now, raffle prizes are the questions on EVERYONES mind today. Who won? Did I win? Well, hang in there as we’ve entered almost all the tickets into the system. BUT WAIT…there’s still time for you to purchase tickets to be entered to win. The deadline for entries is tonight at 23:59MT. The draw will take place and we’ll be contacting the prize winners tomorrow and posting the information online, along with the total we raised for the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.

Now though, I’m just rambling. A lack of sleep will do that to a person. So be sure to check back tomorrow to see if you won…or if you know someone that will be taking you to Vegas! Enjoy the snow in Calgary and again, a SUPER HUGE thanks to everyone that supported the inaugural Tight ‘n Bright for Cancer Research.

Well if you missed it at roughly 6:12 this morning I was on-air with Freeway Frank & Meg Tucker on the Energy 101.5 morning show to chat quickly about Tight ‘n Bright tomorrow night at The Whiskey. Can you believe already that it’s tomorrow night. It has definitely come up quickly and we’re still working out some last minute things. All I know is it will sure be a fun time and that all money raised will be put to a good cause. Get your tickets while you can.

We’ve also learned that after their game, there will be some Calgary Roughneck players coming to party…they’ll be the guys dressed up in suits. Can’t wait to see you all tomorrow night!
